The client needed a plan for product development to meet new competitors' thrusts in the baked goods industry. Most critical was a comprehensive grasp of customers' preparation problems and competitors' reaction driven by dynamics of local bakeries and fast food operations.


Conducted intensive discussions with recipe formulators-developers at baked goods, cake and dough mix producers and fast food bakeries. Inventoried current difficulties and related them to solutions preferred by ingredients and equipment suppliers. Identified needs not addressed by supplier products and service.


Defined critical areas for technical and new product effort versus the ‘politically correct’ industry view. Targeted competitor’s weak spots with specific recommended strategic and technical counter-thrusts. This action halted the erosion of market position.
